Unlike most businesses I sat down and created my values first and built everything else on top of them, they are the foundation. They are my guiding principles in everything that I do, at work, at home and everything in-between. At Roberta Style Lee I define ‘ethics’ as my moral compass. I’m not perfect, nor do I claim to be. But I try to act with integrity and be open to the fact that we all live by different values.
Every action taken is done so with consideration and thought. Businesses decisions are always measured against their impact on:
– Other people
– The environment
– Available resources
– Time constraints
– And budget.
Whilst every effort is made to only invest in and support other companies with strong ethical and sustainable credentials – sometimes the focus is on ‘resourcefulness’ and making the most out of what already exists. Therefore sometimes my styling work is focused on the pre-loved market, or encouraging my clients to ‘invest in pieces’ they will see more than #100wears. Not all my clients ‘shop ethical’ so sometimes it’s just about giving people the options and letting them know where to find them (re: Ethical Brand Directory).
I try and avoid sending items to landfill and maximise the life expectancy of all everything I own, and my clients whether that’s clothing, shoes or business-related products. Prolonging the life of equipment/clothing is also one of my ways of being more ‘sustainable’.
For every brand that joins Ethical Brand Directory, I now plant trees to help offset the energy used by having a website and the public transport I use to get around London.
Tips from Roberta Lee
Before buying anything new ask yourself:
- Will I wear this at least #100wears ?
- Is the colour and shape right?
- Is the quality and craftsmanship going to last over 100 wears and washes?
- Can I wear this in 5-different ways within things I already own?
